Nomads in the Time of the Red

In the world of Cyberpunk RED, Nomads have evolved from the displaced refugees of the 2020s into the most critical logistical force on the planet. Following the collapse of global shipping and the traditional corporate-run supply chain during the 4th Corporate War, the Nomads stepped in to fill the vacuum, becoming the “blood” that keeps the world’s remaining cities alive.

The Role of Nomads

  • The Logistics Backbone: With the global NET down and traditional shipping lanes infested by automated mines and pirates, Nomads are the only ones capable of moving cargo across the “Reunited States” and the oceans. If a city needs food, tech, or medicine, it arrives via a Nomad convoy.
  • Infrastructure Specialists: Nomads are the masters of construction and maintenance. Many Nomad Packs specialize in specific industries, such as high-speed rail operation, bridge repair, or deep-sea salvage.
  • Sovereign Nations: Nomads aren’t just gangs; they are mobile nations. They operate under their own laws, have their own healthcare and education systems within their convoys, and maintain a level of independence that even the Megacorps envy.
  • The Moto Ability: Mechanically, Nomads possess the Moto Role Ability. This represents their deep connection to the family motorpool, allowing them to field highly customized, armored, and weaponized vehicles that are often superior to anything found on the open market.

The Seven Nations

Most Nomad Packs belong to one of the Seven Nations, massive tribal federations that provide mutual support:

  1. Aldecaldos: The most prominent nation in the Night City area, heavily involved in the city’s reconstruction and transport.
  2. Snake Nation: The largest land-based nation, focusing on the maintenance of the old interstate systems and wilderness survival.
  3. The Jodes: Known for their agricultural roots, they often provide the labor for massive farming and irrigation projects.
  4. Blood Nation: A nation that focuses on traveling entertainment and “circus” style convoys, providing a rare source of joy in the Dark Future.
  5. The Meta: Formed from remnants of various militaries, they are highly disciplined and often operate as elite mercenaries or heavy-duty shippers.
  6. The Apollos: Information and communication specialists who help keep the “sneaker-net” (physical data transport) running.
  7. The Folk: The most mysterious of the nations, often focused on specialized craft and internal community building.

Nomad Culture and the Badlands

  • The Family is Everything: To a Nomad, being “exiled” from the Pack is a fate worse than death. The family provides protection, resources, and a sense of belonging in a world that is otherwise hostile.
  • The Badlands: The territory between the surviving cities is known as the Badlands. It is a radioactive, dust-choked wasteland where the law of the city does not reach. This is the Nomad’s home, and they are the only ones who truly know how to navigate its dangers.
  • The Law of the Broken Wheel: A cultural taboo among Nomads. They generally avoid areas contaminated by high-level radiation (marked by the atomic trefoil symbol) unless absolutely necessary, and they harbor a deep hatred for those who use “dirty” weapons that poison the land.
